You rightly believe God has significant purposes for your life (Ephesians 1:3, 2:10)!
You don’t want to just read about those purposes or think about them…you want to fulfill them. You want to fully live the life God has planned for you and make a real and lasting difference in the world.
You don’t want merely to survive or hang on until Jesus comes back, you want to take hold of the eternal life to which you were called and give it to others (1 Timothy 6:12).
If that is you, you are on the right track. Those desires are God’s desires for you. God wants you to experience and accomplish EVERYTHING He had in mind when He wisely and lovingly created you.
The Bible and overwhelming research make it clear that people who change the world the most, who achieve more, and who accomplish their God-given purposes know how to set and achieve goals. They have learned this is how God set up the world and they follow His lead.
Before He went to the cross Jesus said in prayer, “I glorified you on earth, having accomplished the work that you gave me to do” (John 17:4). How did Jesus say He glorified God on earth? By accomplishing the work He had been called to do. How could Jesus confidently say He had accomplished His mission? Because He knew what it was and He prayerfully, intentionally worked the plan He had developed. In other words He set clear God-inspired goals and achieved them. That is His plan for you too!
As a fellow purpose/dream pursuer, I have studied, experimented, and worked with many people over decades in coming up with the divine balance of trusting God while still doing our part. It really is a co-worker relationship with God, isn’t it! Jesus said that He is the Vine, we are the branches, and the only way we can bear fruit (including fulfilling our mission) is by abiding in Him (John 15:5). Abiding includes times of prayer and contemplation but it also includes taking action and working hard. Paul wrote, “For this I toil, struggling with all his energy that powerfully works within me (Colossians 1:29).
Living in God’s Grace
It is God’s grace and our cooperation. It is resting in His love and acceptance as well as giving our best to impact people. It is “struggling with all his energy that powerfully work within” us that gives us fulfillment as we serve our world.
We need God’s guidance and direction. After all, who wants to plan and work hard at accomplishing things that are not in line with God’s eternal purposes? We don’t want to give a great effort for things that do not last when we can do work that counts now and in eternity. Many, many people either live reactionary lives; taking whatever life throws at them as God’s will or take things by the horns only to accomplish things that really do not matter. We need to plan and take action but with God’s guidance and power. You can have both.
There are two main processes we each need to follow in order to achieve God-inspired goals.
Order your life around God’s priorities as found in Scripture
This helps you get clear on your specific purposes.
God is not haphazard in what He does. He is very intentional. He created the universe, the world, and you with much thought and love.
The purposes of God for your life will be in complete harmony with His big purposes for the world.
So when you identify what those purposes are and prioritize your life around them, you are well on your way to living a goal-achieving life that counts.
Develop a repeatable, flexible system you can follow.
Some Christians think that following a system limits God, and it can if the system is never adjusted. However, God Himself works on systems and set up the universe to work on consistent principles. Your body has eleven systems (digestive, circulatory, muscular, etc.) that allow you to be alive, creative, and active. Godly principles and systems actually help facilitate healthier, more productive living.
God set up the world so that it runs on cycles, seasons, and systems that can be counted on. Without them, the world would be even crazier than it often is. Can you imagine what life would be like if some days were 10 hours and others were 40? If gravity only worked sometimes and seeds did not consistently grow into plants?
Yet so many people do not follow a proven process in their living and working. Those who get clear on a process and follow it see at least one hundred times the results of those who do not.
